In 1924, Marcus Loew, who already owned Metro Pictures, bought a controlling interest in the Samuel Goldwyn company and Louis B. Mayer Pictures to form Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). As his theater empire expanded, he had acquired and refurbished enough small movie theaters that he was able to move his business to Los Angeles and venture into movie production in 1918.
